Labyrinth on the Middle Rhine
Although it is a ruin, Rheinfels castle, which is situated high above the town of St. Goar, still presents a picture of strength and might. The many corridors and tunnels are almost like a labyrinth and, together with the rest of the fortification, make up the largest Renaissance castle on the Middle Rhine. The castle’s origin goes back to the 13th century and the castle saw its best times between the 14th till 16th centuries. Even the French troops of Louis XIV found conquering the castle no easy task. Today, Rheinfels is one of the most visited castles on the Rhine and has many annual pageant events. A high standard First Class Hotel is housed within the castle walls and provides an exclusive Rhine experience. It is more than worthwhile to visit this spacious castle enclosure because, on top of everything else, it has the largest underground vaults in Europe.
