Andernach

You wouldn’t think that this youthful and lively town is in actual fact 2000 years old. On first view the town shows itself to be well-fortified with a medieval wall and the 56 metre high tower called the “Round Tower” dating from the 15th

century. Even the “Sun King” Louis XIV who destroyed many towns along the river Rhine had to capitulate at these thick walls. While the tower was the work of the common townsfolk, the Mariendom (Maria Cathedral) demonstrates the power of the Church in those times and is one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches on the Middle Rhine. Other special features of the town are the historical Town Hall with one of the few remaining old Jewish Baths and the Andernach geyser, the world’s largest cold water geyser. In amongst so much history, Andernach presents itself as a lively town where the visitor can take strolls, shop and enjoy the night life.
