Bacharach

The wine town Bacharach is often known as the true centre of Rhine Romanticism and the town does have all the attributes needed to be regarded as one of the most beautiful towns on the whole of the Middle Rhine. Even the Romans had a shrine here for their God “Bacchus” and this may be the root of the town’s name. On entering the town, the first thing the visitor will notice is how intact the town wall with its battlements and towers still is. There are wonderful half-timbered houses extending all around the old parish church, St. Peter’s, and some of them, like the “Altes Haus” “Old House” can be regarded as being the most famous half-timbered houses on the Rhine. Many artists and writers visiting the Rhine have immortalised the town both in paintings and in literature. Highlight your visit by taking a stroll through the old town lanes or to the “Malerwinkel” “Artist Corner”, to the Stahleck castle or the Werner Chapel. The Werner Chapel is now a ruin but, even so, is one of the loveliest examples of these romantic times. The lovely filigree architecture makes it one of the most beautiful Gothic constructions on the Middle Rhine. It was here in Bacharach than the “Huntsman from Kurpfalz” lived. He was made famous by the song “Jäger aus Kurpfalz”. Robert Stolz made his local tavern “Altes Haus” a stage for this, one of his operettas. The Bacharach wine is and always has been a temptation that cannot be resisted.
