Bingen

This town with its 2000 years history is also the gate to the Middle Rhine. At this point, the river Nahe flows into the Rhine and even the Romans felt at home here, which we can see by the many relicts that have been found. In the past, Bingen was often a toy for the powerful and has seen many sieges, wars and also the plague. This is also the town of St. Hildegard of Bingen, famous for her herbal medicines, and where she built her convent. High on top of the Rochus Hill is the Rochus Chapel which was built in 1666 as a memorial to the victims of the plague. The chapel was destroyed during the war in 1795 and rebuilt as a pilgrim chapel in 1814.  Of great interest is the painting donated by von Goethe, which portrays him as St. Rochus.  If you look from the chapel onto the river, you will see the Mouse Tower of Bingen. The tower, built in mediaeval times as a toll tower, is associated with the story of the evil Bishop of Mainz and the rodents that followed him to this conspicuous tower in the Rhine. The Klopp castle is the emblem of the town and was built on Roman fundaments. Here, in the town’s museum, you will find a complete set of instruments used by a Roman doctor on display.
