Braubach
The old Rhine town is inseparable from its castle. The attraction of the Marksburg is known all over the world and Japan even has a carbon copy of the castle. Visitors to the Rhine always find this castle to be a typical example of what they expect a Rhine castle to look like. The Marksburg is the only castle on the Middle Rhine never to have been destroyed and, for this reason, is one of the best examples of a mediaeval fortification. Below the castle the town of Braubach nestles around the foot of the hill. Here you will find half-timbered houses and the general idyllic atmosphere of a wine town. The “Fritz Corner”, a narrow corner pub, is not only a favourite postcard scene. You can still see parts of the town wall and towers. On the Rhine, not far from the landing stages for the ships, you’ll find a pleasant promenade where numerous rose trees have been planted, giving the town an extra attraction. One final tip for the visitor: the three towering chimneys high up on the hill which were once part of a lead and silver mine do not heat the vineyards, even though this is a favourite yarn of the locals.
