Kaub

Kaub has everything to offer that one would expect from a romantic Rhine town: a historical town centre with narrow lanes and pretty half-timbered houses, a defiant castle on a rocky spur, vineyards and, with the “Pfalz”, a stronghold in the middle of the Rhine, even a unique example of mediaeval fortification. Like a ship with bow, stern and a tower resembling a mast, the toll castle sits on a little island in the middle of the Rhine. The visitor can have an especially good view of Kaub’s panorama from a boat trip on the Rhine. In any case, a visit to this mediaeval town should be on the itinerary of everyone’s Rhine trip. You will also hear of two famous people. “Elslein from Kaub” tells the story of the daughter of a cannon caster from the 16th century who successfully freed her town from being besieged by performing many brave deeds. There was one other occasion when Kaub could defy the enemy. In the icy cold New Years Eve of 1813/14 the Prussian General Field Marshall Blücher crossed the Rhine with his troops unnoticed by the enemy and later made a name for himself in the Battle of Waterloo and the victory over Napoleon. There is a statue of him and a Blücher museum in Kaub.
