Lahnstein
The town is, with about 20.000 inhabitants, one of the largest on the Middle Rhine. This is where the idyllic river Lahn meets the Rhine. Because of the town’s convenient infrastructure, it was often besieged during various wars. During the centuries the town was fortified by building two castles: the Lahneck castle and the Neuerburg castle. The town was surrounded by a double wall with 16 towers and a moat. Well worth visiting are the Old Town Hall (around 1500), the Johannis Monastery with the Romanesque Basilica dating 12th century and the mediaeval town wall with its battlements and “Witches Tower”. The Lahneck castle sits like a throne on the ridge of the hills between the rivers Lahn and Rhine and, after being restored in the 19th century, presents itself in English neo-Gothic style. Towering above the castle, you will see the health resort and recreational area. Here, within a landscape of woods and parks, you will find several facilities for health and sport.
