Linz was always a popular destination for exploring the Rhine Romanticism for diplomats and guests from all over the world, as it was only a short distance from Bonn, the former capital of West Germany. Most of the embassies are now in Berlin but Linz has lost none of its charm. To this day many day tourists enter the town through the massive 14th century Rhine Gate and find themselves in the most beautiful square in the town, dominated by the typical half-timbered Rhineland houses and Linz castle. This is the visitors’ first contact with the romantic town which was able to preserve much history within its old walls. The picturesque lanes are narrow and the houses in the old town centre are colourful and florally decorated. The heart of the town throbs in the Butter Market with the bronze figure of the market-woman or all around the Old Marketplace. The lively and traditional rhythm of Linz invites you to simply have a stroll or enjoy some of the many festivities – Karneval, annual fair, hand organ festival or Rhine in Flames – there’s always something exciting happening in this colourful town.
