Neuwied

The Royal town of Neuwied is with 70.000 inhabitants the second largest town on the Middle Rhine. The town is the centre of business and trade but also has lots to offer for the tourist. The Neuwied Zoo is the largest between Cologne and Frankfurt. Not too far away there is the Abbey Rommersdorf which is very well worth visiting. The Abbey can impress with its architectural style and its location. If you head towards the Rhine, you will see two palaces: The Baroque Palace “Engers” houses the regional Trust for Chamber Music and offers you, together with its Diana Hall, the finest example of Rococo on the Rhine. The Town Palace is still home to the baronial family whose first ancestors once promoted the freedom of religion, thus making Neuwied the centre of tolerance. Much of the best furniture belonging to the baronial Röntgen family and precious Kinzing clocks could be found again in many Royal Courts and even as far as the Court of the Czar in St. Petersburg.
