Oberwesel

Oberwesel is fittingly called the town of the towers and the wine. From far, the visitor to the Rhine can recognise Oberwesel’s silhouette made up of the “Liebfraukirche” and the remains of the mediaeval wall with its many still existing towers. The two churches, Liebfrauen and St. Martin, both from the 14th century, are seen as historical art treasures and, with their Alters and bells, are of great importance in Europe. As far back as 1262, Oberwesel had one of the oldest Franciscan monasteries in Germany, the Monoriten Monastery, which is one of the most famous Schools for Latin. The tourist taking a stroll through Oberwesel will be transformed back to mediaeval times. 16 fortification towers surround the town, joining up parts of the old town wall. You can find out more about the former importance of the town by taking part in one of the guided walks and you can taste some delicious wine in one of the cosy taverns. Wine from Oberwesel is one of the best on the Middle Rhine and enriches the traditional dishes served, for example, in the “Historische Weinwirtschaft” “Historical Wine Tavern”. High above, the Schönburg castle and the castle youth guesthouse invite you to spend an extraordinary night in one of the guest rooms.
