Great history was once written here in mediaeval times! Having a suitable political and geographical position, Rhens was the meeting point where the princes gathered to vote for their Kings. The special occasion of the nomination of Karl IV as Roman King was the reason for constructing the Chair of Kings in 1346. This construction was destroyed during the French Revolution but restored in another place in the middle of the 19th century. Today Rhens is a Rhine town full of tradition and a lovely Rhine promenade with many grand half-timbered houses. These houses impress with their elaborate ornaments, their colours and carvings. The “Scharfenturm” is a reminder of the terrible days of the persecution of witches. Witches were locked up, tortured and put to death. Visitors to any of the many taverns and restaurants will probably find that Rhenser mineral water is on the menu. This local mineral water is also well-known in many parts of the country.
