Spay
The wine village of Spay is situated on a curve of the Rhine. In former times, the inhabitants of Spay were mainly fishermen. As during the 19th and 20th centuries more and more ships navigated the Rhine with its many rocky banks, the need for pilot navigation grew and Spay became a centre for navigation of the Rhine. Soon these navigators became some of the wealthiest citizens of Spay. Nowadays there is no great need for these pilots but ships still play a big role in Spay. The Schottel shipyards have been delivering ships to all parts of the world for the best part of 80 years. Spay is also well-known with lovers of good wine. Some of the best wine-growers on the Middle Rhine come from Spay. Visitors will enjoy a stroll through the town with its impressive and charming half-timbered houses.
