St. Goarshausen

For many centuries St. Goarshausen was home for winegrowers and fishermen. The quality of the fish was so good in fact that it was exported to many countries. In the early 19th century there were still about 44 salmon fishers. However, the increasing navigation of the Rhine soon made this also extinct. The last salmon were fished just before the Second World War. Today the town of St. Goarshausen is inseparably connected with the Loreley….the beautiful legendary blonde girl. Sitting on the rock, high above the Rhine, she was, according to the legend, responsible for the shattering of many ships against the dangerous rocks of that very narrow part of the Rhine. The nearby Loreley Rock itself does not only offer a magnificent view over the Rhine valley but also an interesting visitor’s centre (constructed for the Expo 2000) with a wealth of information about the river and traditions the region and its people. Many famous musicians and bands have played at the famous Loreley open-air venue and given their offerings ranging from classic to rock. The second picture postcard view after the Loreley is that of the Katz Castle (Cat Castle). Although it is in private hands and cannot be visited, the castle catches the eye of visitors to this spot. From nearby Patersberg the visitor has one of the most beautiful Rhine views – river, valley, vineyards, ships, castle and town all inclusive. The castle Maus (Mouse) sits high above the neighbouring town of Wellmich and its rooftops and slate hills. This is where the Rhine becomes a game of “Cat and Mouse”!
