In 1948, Konrad Adenauer, then President of the Parliamentary Council, and Robert Schumann, French Foreign Minister, met in Bassenheim Castle. This secret meeting is regarded by current statesmen as an "important milestone on the arduous and rocky road to Franco-German reconciliation". A memorial sign at the Bassenheim town hall commemorates these historic talks. This was set up by the Adenauer-Schumann Memorial Sign Initiative Group and realised by the sculptor Harald Stiedling.
