Feste Kaiser Franz & Festungspark

In 1818, in honour of the Austrian Emperor Franz I, the work was given the name "Feste Kaiser Franz". Completed in 1822, together with other advanced works, it protected the town of Koblenz from attack from the left bank of the Moselle. The fortification system, which was modern at the time, gradually lost its importance after 1850 and was completely abandoned in 1890. In 1920/21 the fortress of Emperor Franz was defended in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. Large parts of the fortress were lost in the process. After the Second World War, the fortress of Emperor Franz was one of many miserable quarters that was dissolved shortly before the destruction of the core factory in 1959. Since 1997, the plant has been managed by the Verein Feste Kaiser Franz e.V. association. One of the special features of the Feste Franz is the last still original fortress baking oven of the fortress Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein.
