You can have a look inside the wine loading crane from April to October every 1st weekend a month.

Oesrich crane

The town's landmark is the historic Rhine crane built in 1743/44. The crane is a timber-frame construction with a base area of approx. 8 x 8 meters. Its roof top is rotatably mounted together with the wooden jib. Prisoners were usually used to drive the pulley by means of large treadwheels inside the crane (even today the "treadmill" is synonymous with unpleasant, uniform work). The quay wall was built at the same time as the crane from stone blocks of the former Mainz castle. Of course, mainly wine barrels were loaded here.

ber every 1st weekend a month.
