20. Mittelalterliches Spectaculum
*****
For over 25 years, the Medieval Spectaculum in Oberwesel has been one of the most famous festivals of its kind in Germany. It is known far beyond the authenticity and the passionate commitment of all participants, it is known far beyond the regional borders and enjoys international recognition. Modern inventions are taboo at the Spectaculum in Oberwesel: Electricity and electrical appliances, any kind of plastic, plastic plates and dishes, paper plates and paper napkins, fast food, bottles and soda cans. Instead, carpenters will show you how half-timbered houses were built in the past against the magnificent backdrop of the medieval city walls. Mud builders will demonstrate how to fill the compartments with mud, and stonemasons will carve elaborate ornaments out of raw stone. Coopers, wine smiths, dyers, wheelwrights and wainwrights, broom makers and weavers, wood turners and slate splitters, timers, distillers, potters, weavers, lamp makers and gingerbread makers demonstrate their almost forgotten arts. Of course, on the romantic, straw-covered streets and squares, the physical well-being will be provided in an appropriate form with food and drinks as they were offered in former times: Wine and juices from clay cups, beer from wooden barrels and the witches' feast from bread plates. All participants wear historical garments and in the evening candles and lanterns bathe the market in mysterious light. The fascinating world of the Middle Ages is within reach.
