The town of Weißenthurm is home to the grave monument of the French General Hoche, who crossed the Rhine with his troops at the Weißer Thurm in 1797 and defeated the Austrians near Neuwied.

The monument is characterised not only by its 8-metre-high obelisk, but also by a walled-off circular enclosure about 32 metres in diameter. The burial chamber can be reached via an underground passage. The general's mortal remains are in an urn, to which two tricolours also point.
