Former riverside city gate
The Kihrstor is located in the Rhine facilities and is the only remaining city gate of the Oberlahnstein city fortifications. It is situated on Brunnenstraße in Oberlahnstein. The city gate is part of the square gate tower, which was built from rubble stone masonry and is 15 meters high. The tower features a battlement and a stair turret. It protected the bridge located in front of it. The tower was built higher as the city was attacked by Count Michel of Wertheim in 1436.
In 1791, it was inhabited by a poor woman for an annual rent of two guilders. After a storm destroyed the apartment, she was forced to move out.
The Kihrstor was integrated into a railway underpass during the construction of the railway in 1862. The city wall serves as an embankment for 203 meters. The tower is marked with flood levels from the years 1882 to 1995. The word Kihrstor might be derived from the word church, as the hospice chapel, mentioned as early as 1330, is located nearby. Today, the Deutsche Bahn AG owns the tower.
