Naturdenkmal Maulbeerbaumallee
Am Rüdesheimer Hafen, 65366 Geisenheim
Mulberry trees were commonly planted as avenues at harbor facilities in the past. This is also the case in Rüdesheim, where for 150 years two avenues of this tree species, originally native to warmer regions of Asia, have stood on the artificially constructed harbor dam. They were designated as a natural monument as early as 1934. Since 1987, members of the Rüdesheim Yacht Club have been taking care of the preservation of the avenue and replanting trees. The leaves of the trees have served for centuries in the breeding of silkworms. Their fruits, which resemble elongated blackberries, taste delightful as jam and juice; in the past, they were also used for dyeing red wine.
