On the 500-meter-long dike wall in front of the city center stands the gauge tower
With the construction of the flood protection dike from 1928 to 1931, the view of the Rhine from Neuwied underwent a thorough transformation. The dike protects the city center and its surroundings from flooding. It stretches 600 meters long, the dike wall made of light and dark striped blocks, from Schlossstraße to Friedrichstraße, featuring two large gate entrances and a slender gauge tower, which is accompanied by a wide boat staircase. While the gauge tower itself represents pure ornamental architecture and is considered an advertising landmark of Neuwied, a gauge system for the dike, though not for shipping, is hidden beneath it, concealed within the masonry.
