Holy Cross Parish Church, colloquially named ‘Rheingau Cathedral’, is a triple-nave hall-type church that was built around 1500 on the foundations of a Romanesque church. Its Three Kings’ altar dates back to 1480 and choir with reticulated vaulting to 1518. From 1836 to 1841 the nave was expanded by adding new vaults. A new west façade was created, with two neo-Gothic towers made of red sandstone. Today’s neo Gothic high altar replaced the Baroque altar in 1885, whose crucifixion ensemble was moved to the southern nave. The church houses tombstones of the noble von Schönborn, von Ostein and von Stockheim families. The crucifixion ensemble on the exterior of the choir was created by the Mainz sculptor, Hans Backoffen (cross, around 1520), and Peter Heinrich Henckes (figures, mid-18th century). Festivals and a weekly (Friday) market are held at Bischof-Blum-Platz. Visitors can linger over a drink in the café.
