After the Dragon Head Path was cycled on June 1 for the UNESCO World Heritage Day, with a dozen stations of Roman artifacts, the ROMAN TOUR on August 2 once again focuses on the border fortifications of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes with its forts, watchtowers, walls, and palisades, which delineated the former Roman world power from free Germania. The tour starts at 10 AM from the parking lot of the elementary school In der Lach in Niederbieber, from where it takes us over field and forest paths on the Limes cycling path over the heights towards Arienheller to the Roman World. Here, we will learn more about the everyday life of the stationed troops at the Limes and in the fort during the exhibition tour. It will also cover how the life of the civilian population developed on both sides of the border wall and what contributed to the destruction of the Limes. The stay here will take about two hours and provide an opportunity for refreshments with coffee and Limes cake. Afterwards, we will head to the first watchtower WP 1 on the banks of the Rhine and then return on the cycling path back to Neuwied. The entry fee for the Roman World is 5 or 6 euros, depending on status or number of people. The guide fee of 50 euros will be charged to the participants. Additional costs for food and drink will be at one's own expense. The total distance is 38 km with 450 meters of elevation, mostly on paved paths and partially on well-traveled gravel surfaces. The tour is suitable for everyday bicycles with gears, trekking, gravel, and mountain bikes as well as pedelecs. Wearing a bicycle helmet is recommended.
