The Wave A history teacher works on the topic of fascism. The students do not understand why the German majority silently and passively witnessed the crimes of the National Socialists. She initiates a simple experiment by uniting the class through exercises in discipline and hierarchical behavior, fostering a sense of community within the group through symbols and slogans. The allure of fascist ideology gains the upper hand playfully at first and then increasingly radically. The experiment spirals out of control. Today, the world is enlightened and safe. Or is it? Populism, xenophobia, autocracies, and movements like the Identitarians or the Rassemblement National fuel an age-old fear across Europe under the guise of great dangers from outside, presenting itself with familiar codes in new words. The real experiment "The Third Wave" by California high school teacher Ron Jones, which became a globally successful novel "The Wave" by Todd Strasser (Morton Rhue) in 1981 and was required reading for decades, raises old questions anew under current political circumstances: What makes a group feel superior to another? Who is in and who is out? Who questions? Who fights for what and who just observes? Does it ultimately take only a sufficient number of silent bystanders to endanger democracy? What role does the Internet play in this? And: What side are you on? Staging: Corinna Schmitz Book: Morton Rhue
