Lecture by Barbara Friedhofen

On March 24, 1865, the Royal Schöffengericht in Sayn drew up a contract that set the course: The Essen steel industrialist Alfred Krupp purchased the Sayner Hütte, the Mülhofener Hütte, the Oberhammer, and iron ore mines near Horhausen in the Westerwald from the Prussian state. In the following years, Krupp invested further funds and acquired the machine factory of Baron von Bleul as well as the Bendorfer ironworks with the Vierwinde mine (later known as Grube Werner) of the Remy family. The economic network between Krupp, the Middle Rhine, and Westerwald lasted for decades, even though the blast furnaces were shut down during the global economic crisis starting in 1926. For the Krupp family, the region was of interest not only economically. The Sayner recreational home for Krupp employees and the hunting lodge Sayneck represent a social and private dimension of the relationships.
