Quo vadis, Latein

Museumstr. 3, 55411 Bingen

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of antiquity in the Roman Year 2026: Culture and wine ambassador Karin Wilhelm invites you to an exciting public tour at the Museum am Strom in Bingen. Look forward to rediscovering a long-forgotten language in a surprisingly fresh and vibrant way.

As part of the Roman Year 2026, cultural and wine ambassador Karin Wilhelm invites you to a public tour at the Museum am Strom in Bingen.

Guests will recognize the supposedly dead language in a new guise, very much alive. For example, Roman wine jugs give hints about how cultural history and language are closely intertwined to this day. Numerous terms from the wine industry have their roots in the Latin language, including wine, press, vineyard, must, vintner, cellar - and "culture".

A Roman milestone, a doctor's kit, a medieval document, and the life of Hildegard of Bingen still leave traces in our language today. Using specific objects such as the Roman milestone, guests will learn about the historical significance of the object and how Latin terms from the military and transportation – as foreign words, known as loanwords – have been preserved in our language usage to this day. The tour is aimed at all guests interested in language and cultural history. Knowledge of Latin is not required!

Admission 6.50 € or (reduced) 4.50 €
Meeting point: in the ticket area of the museum
