Tag des offenen Denkmals in Lahnstein

Kaiserplatz 1, 56112 Lahnstein

Eight landmarks can be visited on September 14.

In Niederlahnstein, the two support associations showcase their church buildings. The St. John's Church at the mouth of the Lahn, the oldest gallery basilica on the Middle Rhine, was built around 1136, with the tower having been started as early as 950. Open from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Tours are offered by the members of the St. John's Church Support Association starting at 11:00 AM on the hour. The last tour begins at 2:00 PM. Admission is free. Donations welcome.
Subsequently, at 4:30 PM, a paid sand painting show with artist Anne Loeper begins. Tickets for 13.00 Euros are available in advance at Blumenhaus Bothe, Emser Straße.

The All Saints Chapel, inaugurated in 1901, will be presented by the namesake support association. Guided tours of the chapel and grotto are offered by the All Saints Chapel Support Circle at 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:00 PM. On the forecourt, the operator of the "Pilgerstübchen" invites visitors for coffee and cake. The chapel is open from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM.

In Oberlahnstein at Hochstraße 17, pharmacist Doris Schlosser opens the rooms of the Former Jerusalem's Pharmacy. The old pharmacy cabinets and pharmaceutical devices are showcased and explained. Tours through the rooms take place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Next to the former freight station stands a Water Tower that has been there since 1899, supplying steam locomotives with water until electrification in the 1960s. The tower remains in its original condition and is being prepared by its owner for holiday apartments. Open from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Tours are available as needed; coffee and cake are also offered.

Along Hintermauergasse, three attractions open their doors: The Powder Tower (Brewery Tower) next to house number 29, which was started in 1324 as the southeastern tower of the medieval city wall and completed in 1411. Since its restoration in 2007/08, it has been fully accessible again. Visits are only possible with a guided tour every half-hour from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. These begin outside on the hour and half-hour (the last tour is at 12:00 PM).

The City Wall House at Hintermauergasse 19 was attached to the city wall around 1700. The narrow half-timbered house was occupied until 1970. The rooms extend into the niches of the city wall. Today, it is a museum for the living culture of the early 20th century. With the campaign "Wallpapering Differently," the support association demonstrates the techniques used to paint walls in the past. The visit to the house is possible up to the storage, the medieval battlement. There stands the permanent exhibition "All Brick or What?" about the 2000-year history of bricks. The City Wall House is open from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

The Witches' Tower at Salhofplatz was built exactly 700 years ago as the northeastern tower of the medieval city wall. Since 1965, it has been used as a local museum and for weddings. From the battlement, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the city from a height of 25 meters. The upper floors are only accessible with a guided tour. These start at 10:00, 11:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 PM (each 40 min.). The ground floor (dungeon) with the section on prehistory is open from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

Parts of the Martin's Castle, Schlossstraße 1, are also open for viewing. The construction of the former customs fortress began in the late 13th century and served the Archbishops of Mainz as a customs office and secondary residence for around 500 years. Tours begin at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM and last approximately 75 minutes. From the inner courtyard, there is also access to the Lahnstein Carnival Museum. The museum, managed by the CCO, has extended its opening hours on Monument Day from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Here, everything related to the fifth season - not just in Lahnstein - can be seen.

Admission and participation in all tours is free on September 14th.
