Alt Heddesdorf
Kirchplatz, 56564 Neuwied
with its beautiful half-timbered houses
The history of the place dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
At the end of the 1st century A.D., Heddesdorf became a Roman garrison and received a fort. In 1647, Count Friedrich of Wied built a mill above Heddesdorf, which developed into the formerly significant Rasselstein rolling mill.
Heddesdorf was incorporated into the "old" city of Neuwied effective April 1, 1904. More than a century has passed since then, and during this period, Heddesdorf has merged with the core city in such a way that, after the creation of the new large city of Neuwied in 1970, it was not officially designated as a distinct district. Nevertheless, it is of great significance, not least because Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen wrote his most important works on cooperative principles here.
Heddesdorf, with its little streets and beautiful half-timbered houses, is always worth a visit. Especially when the Whitsun fair invites celebrations with the Whitsun riders.
