Das Alte Haus
Oberstraße 61, 55422 Bacharach
Sung by many Rhine poets, it also became the place of action in some films. In 1932 Robert Stolz composed an operetta with the title "Wenn die kleinen Veilchen blühen". Scene of this operetta is his favourite pub, the Old House. The "Alte Haus", built in 1586, is one of the most famous medieval half-timbered houses on the Rhine. According to the inscription on the house, its beginnings date back to 1368. While the majority of the old burgher buildings were destroyed by a series of severe town fires at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the "Altes Haus" preserved the rich character of Rhine half-timbered houses in almost all parts. It has four gables, corner towers and rococo doors.
