Tag des offenen Denkmals
Rathausstr. 23, 55430 Oberwesel
The former Minorite monastery in Oberwesel will open its doors on Sunday, September 13, 2026, for the nationwide “Open Monument Day.” From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to explore the monastery grounds, including the church ruins, sacristy, and monastery garden. Admission is free on this day!
This weekend, the traditional wine market will also take place in Oberwesel. After visiting the monastery, enjoy a glass of wine at the festival grounds and admire the parade starting at 3:00 PM.
The eventful history of the Minorite Monastery dates back to the 13th century. A fire in 1836 destroyed large parts of the monastery, and the neighboring people lost all their belongings. Out of necessity, they used the wall remnants and ruins of the monastery complex to build simple shelters and workshops. This led to the creation of a unique district that has been preserved and inhabited to this day. In 2006, the Kulturstiftung Hütte Oberwesel began to work towards the preservation of the former Minorite Monastery.
